Preparation
- Boil a large pot of salted water and cook the cavatappi pasta al dente according to package instructions.
- When there is about a minute left of cooking time, add the broccoli florets to the boiling pasta water.
- Once the pasta is tender and the broccoli is bright green, drain in a colander and set aside.
Sauce Preparation
- In the same pot, melt butter over medium heat and then add the flour. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Slowly stream in the milk while whisking continuously until no lumps remain.
- Add in Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a low simmer and cook over medium/low heat for 8-9 minutes, whisking frequently until thickened.
- Turn off the heat, add shredded cheeses, and stir until melted.
Combine and Serve
- Taste the sauce and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
- Stir in the cooked pasta and broccoli.
- Serve hot and enjoy your warm, creamy bowl of goodness!
Notes
For a crispy finish, you can top with breadcrumbs and broil for a few minutes. Use freshly grated cheese for optimal melting. Experiment with herbs or spices for added flavor.
