Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until foamy.
- Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf or desired shape.
- Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- With a sharp knife, make a few slashes on the top of the loaf for steam to escape.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let it cool before slicing.
Notes
For a more flavorful crust, brush the bread with olive oil before baking. Store leftovers in a paper bag at room temperature for up to 3 days.
