Ingredients

For the hamburger steaks
  • 1 lb ground beef Main protein for the patties
  • 1 tsp seasoning salt Enhances flavor; can substitute with salt and black pepper
For the onion gravy
  • 2 tbsp salted butter Adds a rich base for sautéing the onions
  • 1 large yellow onion Provides sweetness and depth when caramelized
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Used for thickening the gravy
  • 1 cup milk Gives the gravy a creamy texture
  • 1 cup shredded cheese Adds creaminess; choose from several varieties

Method

Preparation
  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and starting to caramelize, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Shape ground beef into 6 round balls and season one side with seasoning salt or salt and black pepper.
Cooking
  1. Increase the heat to medium-high and cook the beef balls seasoned side down for 2 minutes.
  2. Press to a 3/4 inch thickness, season again, and cook for 4 minutes before flipping.
  3. Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until browned with a minimum internal temperature of 160 degrees F.
  4. Top patties with the cooked onions and cheese.
  5. In the same skillet, ensure there is 1/4 residual grease, discard excess if needed, and lower the heat.
  6. Sprinkle flour over the drippings, whisk to combine, and cook for about 1 minute.
  7. Gradually add milk while whisking to prevent lumps, cooking until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  8. Serve the hamburger steaks with the onion gravy on the side or in individual bowls for dipping.
