Method

Preparation
  1. Brown the ground beef. Heat a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, salt, and pepper; brown the meat for about 5 minutes, breaking it apart. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and set aside.
  2. Cook the vegetables. Reduce heat to medium and add olive oil. Once hot, add onion, green and red bell peppers, and sweet potato; cook for 10-15 minutes until softened and golden brown.
Cooking
  1. Add garlic and spices. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin, chipotle chili powder, oregano, cayenne, and cinnamon; cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  2. Simmer with broth. Add beef broth, scraping up any browned bits, and let simmer for 3 minutes.
  3. Add remaining ingredients. Stir in diced tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, and reserved ground beef.
  4. Thicken the chili. Reduce heat to medium-low, partially cover, and simmer for about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes until thickened.
Serving
  1. Finish and serve. Stir in sugar, adjust seasoning to taste, and serve hot with desired toppings.
  2. Store leftovers. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days; reheat on stovetop or microwave. Freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

For deeper flavor, consider browning the beef more until it’s nicely caramelized. Add a splash of apple cider vinegar before serving to brighten the flavors. Use fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley as a garnish for a fresh touch.
