Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 14 oz firm tofu Provides the main protein source.
  • 2 tbsp coconut aminos Adds savory flavor to the tofu.
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch Creates a crispy coating when fried.
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast Offers a cheesy taste without dairy.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Enhances flavor with garlicky notes.
  • 1 tsp onion powder Adds depth with its mild sweetness.
  • 1 tsp sea salt Imparts essential seasoning and flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper Provides a gentle heat and complexity.
  • 3 tbsp olive oil Used for frying, contributing to the crispiness.

Method

Preparation
  1. Press the tofu: Place tofu between a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and press it with a heavy pan or weighted object for 30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Cut the tofu: After pressing, cut the tofu into 1/2-inch cubes and place them in a large bowl.
  3. Add soy sauce: Pour the coconut aminos or soy sauce over the tofu cubes, tossing gently to coat.
  4. Prepare the coating: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper.
  5. Coat the tofu: Sprinkle the mixture over the tofu pieces and toss gently until each piece is evenly coated. Let it rest for 5 minutes, then toss again to ensure a thick coating.
Cooking
  1. Heat the oil: In a skillet or wok, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry the tofu: Carefully add the tofu cubes, ensuring they are spaced apart and not touching. Fry for about 2 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Drain excess oil: Transfer the fried tofu to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the tofu in soy sauce before coating it. Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying for optimal crispiness. Reheat in an oven or air fryer to restore its crispiness.
