Ingredients

Pretzel Dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour The main structure for the pretzel dough.
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast Helps the dough rise, creating a light and airy pretzel.
  • 1.5 cups warm water Activates the yeast, essential for dough development.
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Aids in activating the yeast and adds sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor in the pretzel dough.
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda Used in boiling water to give pretzels a chewy crust.
  • 1 large egg Provides a beautiful golden color when brushed on pretzels before baking.
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt For topping, adding crunch and flavor.
Chocolate Coatings
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips For a sweet coating on half of the pretzels.
  • 1 cup blue candy melts For a festive, colorful dip to celebrate the holiday.
  • 1 cup red candy melts Another colorful dip to match the patriotic theme.
  • 1 cup sprinkles Optional decorations for added festivity.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until a dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it's smooth and elastic.
  4. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a gentle boil.
  3. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 20 inches long and shape them into pretzel shapes.
  4. Drop each pretzel into the boiling baking soda water for about 30 seconds. Remove and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Brush the tops of the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Decorating
  1. Melt the white chocolate, blue candy melts, and red candy melts in separate bowls.
  2. Once the pretzels are baked and cooled slightly, dip half of each pretzel in the melted red or blue coating, drizzle the contrasting color on top, and sprinkle with festive sprinkles. Allow the coatings to set before serving.
