Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer until fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Beat in the cream cheese until evenly combined.
  3. Add in the vanilla extract and salt.
Mixing Dry Ingredients
  1. In a separate bowl, sift together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, then whisk gently.
  2. With the mixer on low speed, carefully beat the cocoa and powdered sugar into the butter mixture.
  3. Turn the mixer up to medium speed and continue beating until fully combined.
Final Adjustments
  1. If the frosting seems too thick or sweet, add in 1 to 2 tablespoons of whipping cream.
  2. If not sweet enough, mix in a little more powdered sugar, about 1/4 cup at a time.
Serving
  1. Transfer the frosting to a piping bag to decorate cupcakes, or frost with a flat knife.
