Method
Preparation
- In a large bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer until fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Beat in the cream cheese until evenly combined.
- Add in the vanilla extract and salt.
Mixing Dry Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, sift together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, then whisk gently.
- With the mixer on low speed, carefully beat the cocoa and powdered sugar into the butter mixture.
- Turn the mixer up to medium speed and continue beating until fully combined.
Final Adjustments
- If the frosting seems too thick or sweet, add in 1 to 2 tablespoons of whipping cream.
- If not sweet enough, mix in a little more powdered sugar, about 1/4 cup at a time.
Serving
- Transfer the frosting to a piping bag to decorate cupcakes, or frost with a flat knife.
Notes
Ensure butter and cream cheese are at room temperature for optimal mixing. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
